In 2019, an operation by the Military Police in Rio left 15 dead in the most violent action of the last decade in the state, and investigations were opened to find out if there was a crime in the conduct of police officers. Technology was used by the Public Ministry to try to find out what happened.
In February 2019, in central Rio de Janeiro, rival factions from the hills of Fallet, Fogueteiro and Coroa were engaged in a dispute for territory. A Military Police operation in the community left 15 people dead, the most violent police action of the last decade in Rio de Janeiro.
Two investigations were opened. At the time, the Military Police opened an inquiry and concluded that there was no “crime or transgression” in the conduct of the PMs. And the Civil Police asked for the case to be closed, alleging that the police acted in self-defense. The Public Defender of Rio contests the result of the investigations
Faced with so many questions, the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro opened a new investigation. As the crime scene was not preserved, experts rebuilt the house in 3D, in a free partnership with an augmented reality studio. According to investigators, this is the first time, in the whole country, that this technology has been used by the Public Ministry. The Fantastic experienced, first hand, the result of this reconstitution.
